ABOUT
At twelve years old, Haruko peered through a viewfinder, and the world shifted. The landscape before her, once a mere scene, transformed into a painting, its three dimensions compressed into an emotionally charged tableau. This revelation, this awakening to the power of framing, ignited her lifelong passion for photography.
Following her graduation with a BA in Theater, Music, and Business from CSUH, Haruko launched her career as a professional photographer. Alongside her field work, she found solace and inspiration in the quiet intimacy of the darkroom. There, accompanied by her favorite music, she spent countless hours developing film and experimenting with various printing techniques, honing her craft and discovering her unique voice as a photographer.
For fourteen years, Haruko immersed herself in the vibrant world of photojournalism in the SF Bay Area, capturing compelling stories for major publications and corporations. Her award-winning work resonated with audiences worldwide. Seeking new horizons, she relocated to New York City, where she thrived as a freelance photographer, documenting the city's dynamic evolution during the Dot-Com era. Driven by her passion and entrepreneurial spirit, she founded Capsule Studio NYC in 1999. Today, Capsule Studio NYC remains a vital part of the New York City creative community, recognized as the longest-running photography studio and event space owned by a woman who is also a minority and queer.
Driven by a lifelong curiosity, Haruko has pursued a diverse range of interests, from Zen archery and equestrian sports to animal training and the performing arts. This multifaceted perspective informs her photography, allowing her to connect deeply with her subjects. Her work began with intimate portraits of pets, capturing their unique personalities and revealing their essence. This passion evolved, leading her to explore the world of horses, documenting horse events and culture.
With years of experience in the industry, Haruko is a passionate educator. She conducts engaging group workshops and classes, while also offering personalized consultations on photography, and the business of photography. Her teaching style is warm and encouraging, fostering a creative and supportive learning environment where students are empowered to explore their artistic vision.
